 Answers for previous page

1. What is the SI base unit for measuring mass? The mass base unit is the kilogram,
2. A kilogram bag of coffee is the same as how many pounds? 1 kg = 2.2 pounds or 1 kg = 2.2 lbs
3. What is the body weight in pounds ( lb) for a child who weighs 20 kilograms? (2.2 lb /1 kg ) ( 20 kg ) = 44 lb
4. Are the sizes of the Kelvin and Celcius degrees the same? Yes, the two types of degrees are the same size. This allows the conversion from Kelvin to Celcius to be done by subtraction of 273.
5. State a reason why you think time units are the same in all three measurement systems.

6. The metric system and the SI units have the same origins. They are based on the "age of reason" during the period 1780-1800. This is roughly the same period as the American and French revolutions. Give one reason why the newly independent American colonies of Britain did not adopt the metric system as quickly as the French and European countries.

The metric system was used in countries under control of France or under the influence of France. This was the period when Napoleon extended French influence over most of continental Europe.

7. Name the SI base units for measuring the following quantities mass, temperature, length, and time.

The mass base unit is the kilogram, The temperature base unit is the kelvin degree. The length base unit is the meter. The second is the base time unit

8. Name the base unit for measuring time in the SI and metric system.

The second is the base time unit for both systems. Check these pages for more.

9. Which of the following matches the prefix for 1,000,000?

a. micro
b. milli-----------------
c. mega
d. kilo

Mega- means 1 million or 1,000,000

10. Which of the following multiples matches the prefix nano-?
a. 0.01 b. 1000 c. 0.000000001 d. 0.000001
The prefix nano- is the same as 1/1,000,000,000 or 0.000000001
11. Which of the following is a derived unit?
a. meters b. seconds c. pounds d. miles/hour

A derived unit is made using other units. This means miles / hour is a derived unit. Other examples are dollars/ pound, and density in grams / milliliter. Check this page for more on derived units.

12. Which is smaller a millimeter or a centimeter?

A millimeter is 1/10 on a centimter. Milli- means 1/1000 while centi- means 1/100.

13. Identify the smaller prefix in the following pairs.
milli-or nano- kilo- or micro- centi- or giga- d. mega- or kilo-

nano- 1/ 1,000,000,000 is smaller than milli- 1/1000

micro- 1/ 1,000,000 is smaller than kilo- 1000

centi- 1/ 100 is smaller than giga- 1,000,000,000

kilo- 1000 is smaller than mega- 1,000,000
